CDR Philip J. Kennedy, USN Ret., 92, of Rock Island, passed away on Thursday January 4, 2018.

In accordance with his wishes, no services are planned. Interment will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Arrangements are entrusted to Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Memorial remembrance and donations may be made to Alleman High School Athletic Fund.

 Philip was born in Rock Island on November 19, 1925, the son of Joseph P. Kennedy and Anne Heidemann Kennedy. He attended schools in Rock Island and Davenport, and graduated from St. Joseph High School. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island.

 He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Virginia Naab Kennedy; a son, Timothy of Maui, Hawaii; a daughter Eiko Oliver, of Syracuse, NY; and a daughter Bic Brady, of Rock Island; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ellen Stoker of Davenport; and an infant son.

 He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served for thirty-five years of active duty. He participated in combat operations in WW II in Korea and Vietnam. He is served on twelve naval ships and US and Foreign shore activities.

 He was awarded several combat related medals and commendations. Philip was what was known in the Navy as a “Mustang”, having served in all the enlisted ranks prior to being commissioned. He retired as a Commander, USN in 1977.
