My sympathy to Terry and her family on the passing of Dan. Dan had already retired when I started working at Bettendorf Middle School, but teachers spoke very highly of him to me. He was very kind-hearted. I remember Dan's frequent trips to the school as a devoted grandfather to Chelsea. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dan's passing. For several years Dan and I played Tennis on a regular basis at various locations. The thing I remember most about Dan was no matter who was winning or losing, Dan was always coaching with encouraging remarks and tips. That includes having a few discussions with his own tennis racquet! Dan was a great guy and a true gentleman.

This is Marcy (Elliott) Haynes. My Dad is Dick Elliott. Mr. Manning and my Dad worked at Middle School and played tennis together for years. I just wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Manning was very special and was a big part of our lives. Dad enjoyed playing tennis with him. I also got to work with Mr. Manning one year in his reading class when I was helping a student and I always looked forward to being in his classroom. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My heart breaks to hear of Mr Manning's passing. He was one of my favorites throughout my time at Bettendorf, and there are plenty of things I learned from him that I try to pass on to my students now (dictionary races? They work with Chemistry textbooks too!). I hope his family has a sense of peace, knowing he left a fantastic legacy through all the lives he touched. I will never forget his smile, encouragement, and positive attitude about life.
I pray you relish the joy he brought and know he is with Our Lord watching over you.
-Amy Schultz, 6th grade English, 1984-85.

My condolences to the family of Mr. Manning. I was one of his students in the 1980s at Bettendorf Middle School. I remember him fondly - we were both die-hard Cubs fans and used to talk baseball quite a bit. I have to admit I also did a lot of talking with my best friend Theresa during his class and spent a few days after school writing sentences. My apologies for that! Both of us are now teachers no doubt in part due to his inspiration and enthusiasm in the classroom. I have thought of him often and fondly ever since. May he rest in peace.

To Dan's family,
So sorry to hear of Dan's passing. Dan was a great personal friend and teaching colleague for many years at Middle School. We traveled many roads together over the years. He was my tennis partner and an avid competitor. I will miss him and I share your loss.

I don't know where to begin..... I've known Dan and Terry since the Urbana days. I graduated in the class ahead of Terry. My sister Deena was also Terry's classmate. Over the years we shared similar career paths, raised our families in the Quad Cities area and always stayed in contact. When my sister Deena passed away, Dan and Terry donated a memorial bench in her memory to the old Urbana school house.
I shall never forget Dan. He had a gentle soul and a way of making everyone around him feel better about themselves.

Mr. Manning was my 6th grade social studies teacher. He helped to spark my interest in politics and current events, which eventually led me to pursue a degree in political science. I continue to be thankful for his positive influence!

I'm very sorry to hear of Mr. Manning's death. I was one of his many language arts students at Bettendorf Middle School, approximately 1980-1983. He was one of the best teachers I had. I loved to read, and I didn't fit in, and it seemed like Mr. Manning was the rare person who thought that it was OK to read all the time and not fit in. I remember him doing so many unusual, creative activities with us in class. One time he put on a record of someone reciting Edgar Allen Poe poetry, put a candle in the middle of the record, and turned out the lights to make the atmosphere suitably spooky. It was great. Another time he put various items with strong smells in paper bags around the room, and had us go around and try to identify each item only by smell, to get us to think about things a different way than usual and not make assumptions, I guess. (I remember one of the items was vinegar.) It really struck me, because I hadn't had any other teachers who did creative things like that. One day I was walking home from school, reading a book as I walked and not paying attention to my surroundings. Suddenly Mr. Manning passed me, walking home himself, and congratulated me on reading even while I walked. He was a wonderful teacher. I send my best wishes to his family, and my thanks for his work with us.

Dan was a people person. I had the pleasure of team teaching with him for fifteen years, and he always brought a lightness and sense of humor to our philosophy of education. Our team meetings were usually punctuated with Dan's laughter and, of course, his choice of food to eat during our team time, which usually ended up being on his glasses. He was a generous, caring friend, and I shall miss him very much.

My sincere sympathies to Terry and her children. I met Daniel on the tennis court. He was very perfectionnist. He was practising a lot by himself to improve his serving. He was a very nice guy.
