Michael G. Hoben

Michael Hoben, 77, of Rock Island, died Thursday, October 19, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.  Visitation will be Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island.  Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.  Entombment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island.  Memorials may be made in care of the Rock Island High School Athletic Department.

Michael was born in Rock Island on July 11, 1940, a son of Harold and Kathryn Hall Hoben.  He graduated from Rock Island High School, class of 1958.  Michael married Dora Rook on June 30, 1961 at Memorial Christian Church, Rock Island.

Michael worked various positions in the mechanical engineering department at International Harvester, Farmall Works.  He retired in 1986 on the closing team.  He was later employed for 10 years as the Moline YMCA building and grounds director and 5 years with a security company, retiring in 2002.

Michael spent over twenty years with the Rock Island Auxiliary Police Department and enjoyed collecting Lionel trains and Farmall tractors.  He enjoyed his yearly fishing trips to northern Wisconsin and traveling with his wife.  Michael was a very proud and active Rock Island High School Alumni who spent time selling tickets and working with the chain gang at football games.  He will forever be known as a people person who never knew a stranger.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Dora Hoben, Rock Island; daughters (and spouses), Lisa (Brian Grabau) Hoben, Port Charlotte, Fla. and Karen (John) Frieden, Rock Island; grandchildren, Alexander, Ian and Caroline Judd and Brian (Amy Matteson) and Ellen Miers; step-grandchildren, Peter, Elliott and Christian Frieden; sister, Barbara (Jerry) Heath, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and nieces, Leslie Jacobsen, Chris Kubicek and Melanie Clark.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
