Walter Trice, Sr. Obituary

Walter W. Trice, Sr., of Rock Island, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at UnityPoint-Trinity, Rock Island.

 Services are 11:00 a.m. Monday at Gaines Chapel A.M.E. Church, East Moline, with visitation one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Burial, with military honors presented by V.V.A. of the Quad Cities - Chapter 299, will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Arrangements are entrusted to Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities or to Vietnam Veterans of America-Quad Cities Chapter 299.

 Walter was born in Moline, Ill., a son of Algie and Dorothy Branch Trice, Sr. He married Vanessa Williams on October 7, 1984 in East Moline, Ill.

 Walter was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. While serving in the Marines, he enjoyed boxing. He opted out of the Olympics at the time to serve during the Vietnam War.

 He retired from Rock Island County in 2006, following 30 years of service. Walter was a member of Gaines Chapel A.M.E. Church, East Moline and a former board member of the Martin Luther King Center, Rock Island. He also was an active volunteer with other area community groups.

 Walter was an avid runner and competed in the Boston Marathon several times, as well as other running events throughout the country. He also enjoyed bicycling and traveling.

 Surviving are his wife, Vanessa, of Rock Island; children (and spouses), Walter W. Trice, Jr., Rock Island, Dennis (Rebecca) Trice, Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Erica (Lionel) Mitchell, Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren, Marcus Daniels, Bryanne Trice, Garry Allbritton, Brandi Trice, Jada Trice and Dennis Trice, Jr.; sister, Alma Warden, East Moline; brothers, Algie Trice Jr., Rock Island and Ron Trice Sr., Coal Valley; and a host of nieces, nephews, additional family and friends.

 Walter was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Trice.
