George C. Yeager, 81, of Rock Island, died Thursday March 13, 2008 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.
Visitation will be at 12:00 p.m. with services following at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, IL. Inurnment with military honors, presented by American Legion Post 569/200 and V.F.W. Post 1303, will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Mayo Clinic or American Cancer Society.
George was born July 23, 1926 in Rock Island, IL, the son of Otto Yeager and Violet Bowling Yeager. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He married the former Roberta A. Sutley on June 20, 1947 in Franklin, KY.
George had an extensive career in both retail sales of electronics and appliances before moving on to a series of businesses including “The Thieves Market”, auto auction, art and antique dealing. For many years George and his longtime friend, Mike Fitzgerald, sponsored sporting events such as Harlem Globetrotters and antique venues and a variety of other business endeavors. George was known for his expertise in all facets of art, jewelry and antiques. He was respected throughout the area for his knowledge of art and was a valuable asset to many in the Midwest. He was a long time member of The Chicago Art Institute. George was known for his integrity and for being generous with his time and talents and was a person who shared his knowledge with others. The only thing more important to him than his love of art was the love of his family.
Surviving are his wife, Roberta A. Yeager, Rock Island; children (and
spouses), Carla (Daniel) Carlson, Kingwood, TX, Doloris "Dee" (Jack) Derrick, Reinbeck, IA; John (Carol) Yeager, Rock Island, and Mark Yeager, Rock Island;grandchildren, Christine Carlson, Dallas, TX, David Carlson, Austin, TX, Jason Tamra) Derrick, Grundy Center, IA, Jackie Derrick, Dike, IA, Benjamin (Juliana) Yeager, Chicago, IL, Matthew Yeager, Rock Island, and Loren (Robyn) Yeager, Davenport, IA; and great grandchildren, Austin Derrick and Reagan Derrick. He was also survived by nieces and nephews Andy Zeglin, Mike Zeglin, Jeff Zeglin, Anita Tady and Marlene Lawrence.
George was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Anita McCall and Doloris Zeglin Marke.
