Albert Leonard Lindstrom, 86, of Rock Island, died at 7:05AM on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at St. James Lutheran Church, 3145 31st Ave., Rock Island. Private inurnment will be at a later date. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time and following the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the Church or to the Playcrafters Barn Theatre. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family.
Mr. Lindstrom was born on August 8, 1921 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, a son of Reuben and Linda Ring Lindstrom. His mother brought him back to Rock Island as an infant following the death of his father.
Len graduated from Augustana College with a degree in English, and was a member of the Augustana Choir and the Varsity Wrestling Team. He was a W.W. II U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Pacific as a naval aviator. He continued flying jets in the Naval Reserve until 1958, when he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
He married the former Annette Anderson of Escanaba, Michigan on March 25, 1945. He worked at the Rock Island Argus as a reporter and award winning photographer for five years and then at Deere & Company for 32 years, retiring in 1984 as copy editor of the advertising department.
Len was perhaps best known in the community as an amateur actor, appearing on stage at the Moline Playcrafters Barn Theatre in more than 35 roles dating back to 1960. Often co-staring with wife Annette, he had leading roles in “Harvey”, “On Golden Pond”, “You Can’t Take It With You” and “The Four Poster”. His favorite role was that of Weller Martin in “The Gin Game”. Len was a 1953 charter member of St. James Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where he sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and served on the church council. Len was also a volunteer driver for Meals On Wheels and was a reader for the WVIK Radio APRIS reading service for the blind. He was an award-winning amateur photographer and videographer, and was a member of the Quad City Photography Club.
Survivors include his wife, Annette; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sandy Lindstrom, Rockford, Ill.; daughter and son-in-law, Lindy and Allen Wilson, Madison, Wis.; grandchildren (and spouses), Julie (Adam) Alsup, Amy (Matt) Bowden, Jeffrey Lindstrom, Anna Britt Wilson, Heidi Ann Wilson and Erika Ring Wilson; great-grandchildren, Garrett and Brook Alsup and Nadia Bowden and sisters, Alice Dolph, Wadsworth, Ohio and Frances Zaruba and her husband, Bill, Phoenix, Ariz.
