Vera M. Hansen Manuel, 87, of Rock Island, died Thursday March 12, 2009 at Rock Island Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services are 11:00 a.m. Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where a Women of the Moose memorial service will be held 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family to be designated later. Vera was born June 9, 1921 in Port Byron, IL, a daughter of Peter Walter Hansen and Elizabeth Jeanette Weaver Hansen. She married George A. Manuel, Sr. on September 13, 1944 in Rock Island. He preceded her in death on February 21, 1985. Vera worked for Birtman Electric, Rock Island, for eleven years. She was later employed at Servus Rubber Co, Rock Island, for 20 years. She was a member of Memorial Christian Church, Rock Island, a longtime member of the Women’s Bowling Association, and a member of the Rock Island Women of the Moose for over 60 years. She was an avid bowler for over 50 years, enjoyed bingo, making crafts, and avid fan of the Chicago Cub’s. She was a volunteer at the Franciscan Hospital and later Trinity Medical Center for many years. Surviving are her son, George A. Manuel, Jr., Palm Springs, CA; stepson (and spouse), Frank (Patricia) Manuel, Milan; 10 grandchildren, including Marie Manuel and Donna Nipper, both of Rock Island, and Sandi Manuel, Milan ; 4 great-grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rosalind Lee, Kansas City, MO. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, husband, stepson, Karl Manuel, brother, Walter B. Hansen, grandson, Frank L. “Butchey” Manuel III, and a great granddaughter, Cassandra Lynn.
