Robert E. McNichols, 85, of Rock Island, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Oak Glen Nursing Home, Coal Valley. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 7th, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, where visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Burial, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 569/200 and V.F.W. Post 1303, will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Quad-City Humane Society. Robert was born February 2, 1924, in Osceola, Iowa, a son of Edward and Ruth Ames McNichols. He married Bonnie Chasey on March 12, 1946. She preceded him in death on May 26, 2004. Mr. McNichols worked at Normoyle & Berg Construction in Rock Island for over 25 years. He retired in 1986. He was a member of Teamsters Local 371, Rock Island. Robert proudly served his country in the Army, serving in both World War II and the Korean War. During World War II he served in the South Pacific in Saipan and Okinawa, where he was highly decorated for his service. Robert was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting. In later years, he enjoyed woodworking. He made numerous beautiful oak pieces for his children and grandchildren that will be cherished for generations to come. Survivors (and spouses) are his children, Rhonda (Ron) Carlyle, Rock Island, David McNichols, Milan, Robert McNichols, Jr., Davenport, Allen (Barb) McNichols, Aledo, Byron (Linda) McNichols, Preemption, and Nora (Darrell) Kelsall, Coal Valley; 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Connie Jean McNichols; granddaughter, Nichole Lobdell; sister, Pearl Lomika; and brother, Paul McNichols. A special thank you to the caregivers at Oak Glen Nursing Home, who took excellent care of Robert during the six months he was in their care.
