Robert Kaplan, 91, and Leona Kaplan, 90, of
Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Rock Island, passed
away within hours of each other on April 12 and 11,
2009, respectively.
A graveside service for Robert will be held on
Tuesday, April 14, at 10 a.m. at Hebrew Cemetery in
Rock Island. Memorial services for Leona are being
planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be directed to Citizens to Preserve
Blackhawk Park Foundation. Arrangements are by
Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in
charge of local arrangements.
Dr. Kaplan and Leona were married in 1943. Formerly
of Rock Island, Dr Kaplan practiced medicine for 49
years in the community. Dr. Kaplan served in the US
Army as a captain and served in Germany in the
immediate post war period.
The Kaplan’s retired to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1995,
and became members of Temple Ahavath Chesed.
Leona was a member of the Tri City Jewish Center
Hadassah and served as a docent at the Davenport
Museum of Art. She was also active in the Girl Scouts.
Surviving are three children, Judith Cohen, Denver,
Colo., Dr. Joseph (Barbara) Kaplan, Jacksonville, Ann
(Martin) Moltz, Chicago; grandchildren, Amy Pogrebin,
Boulder, Colo., Rebecca Cohen, Boulder, Zachary
Kaplan, West Hollywood, Calif., Mindy Kaplan,
Brooklyn, N.Y., and Benjamin Moltz, Chicago; and one
great-grandchild. Leona has a sister who survives,
Helen Freeman of Atlanta, Ga.
