| Carl Leslie “Les” Anderson, 92, of Rock Island, died at sunrise on Sunday at his home.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Inurment will be at a later date in Swedesburg, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Swedish Museum in Swedesburg, Iowa, Swedesburg Lutheran Church or to Grace Lutheran Church, Davenport.
Carl Leslie Anderson was born on July 16, 1917 in Henry County, Iowa, a son of Carl and Dora Pantzar Anderson. He married Ruth Norman on August 3, 1940 in Swedesburg.
Les farmed for 22 years in Swedesburg and served as a math teacher in Southeast Iowa for 10 years. After receiving his Masters degree from University of Northern Iowa at the age of 50, he came to Rock Island in 1968 and taught math for 13 years at Rock Island High School. He retired in 1981.
He was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran. Les was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Davenport, Phi Delta Kappa (P.D.K.), the Vikings and the American Legion in Olds, Iowa. He enjoyed woodworking, biking and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Ruth; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and John Retzl, Moline, Joan and Don Rinner, Iowa City, Jean Anderson and Dale Nicely, Rockford and Gwen and John Cliff, Rock Island; 11 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Doris Peterson, Winfield, Iowa; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Esther.
