Donald L. Bateman, 82, of Milan, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009 at his home.
Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial is in Chapel Grove Cemetery, Bowling Township. Visitation is an hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Donald Lee Bateman was born on Oct. 3, 1926 in Jacksonville, Ill., a son of John and Rose Ater Bateman. He married Shirley A. Harroun on Dec. 14, 1946 in Reynolds.
Don worked as a mechanic for Standard Forwarding and previously at Bob Eriksen Chevrolet, Milan.
He was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran. Don was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 371.
Don took great pride in taking care of his home and yard, and was always tinkering with something in his beloved garage. He was an avid golfer and friend to many, ever willing to share a joke, or lend a helping hand.
He faced the trials of aging with admirable strength, and remained courageous and hopeful to the end of his days.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Peggy Bateman, Groveland, Ill.; daughter-in-law, Judy Bateman, Rock Island; grandchildren, Aaron Bateman and his wife, Sherah, West Peoria, Ill. and Andrea Bateman, Los Angeles, Calif.; step-grandson, Ben Elder, Rock Island; and a sister, Bernice Schroeder, Milan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bret Bateman; and brothers, Bob and Russell.
