Lawrence Eugene (Larry) Morgan passed-away at his residence in Rock Island. A memorial service will be held at 11:00a.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at the Church of Peace, 1114 12 Street, Rock Island.
He was the son of Lawrence Morgan and Dortha Christie-Garrett of Ottumwa, Iowa. He was raised by two Step-Fathers, Joseph Welsh and Charles Garrett. And attended public schools in Ottumwa before volunteering to join the US Army and participating in the liberation of Germany from Nazi control in late 1944 and 1945. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 and received his GED from Rock Island High School after relocating to the Quad Cities in 1947.
Larry was a civil servant at the Rock Island Army Reserve Center and served briefly at the Rock Island Arsenal. Prior to his government service, he worked for Bituminous Insurance Company, Royal Neighbors Insurance Company, and Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Company. He retired in the mid-1980’s.
Lawrence Morgan married Gladys Austin in Rock Island on October 14, 1950. The couple had one Son, Paul Eugene Morgan of North Las Vegas, NV. The couple divorced in 1963, remarried each other in 1965, and divorced again in 1971.
Larry was a member of the Moline American Legion Post, the Eagles, the Rock Island Boat Club and the Midwest Country Music Association.
Lawrence was preceded in death by: his Parents; his Step-Fathers; his Step-Mother; his former spouse; brothers Richard Welsh of Tucson, AZ and Charles Garrett, Jr. of Moline, IL; two sisters, Evelyn Welsh-Brummett of Texas and Dortha (Maxine) Garrett-Kinnan of Moline, IL. He is survived by his Son, his sister, Mary Garrett-Manning of Sauk Village, IL and his brother, John Garrett of Annawan, IL. |
