Sonia M. Ribeiro, 81, of Milan, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at her home. Services for Ms. Ribeiro will be 11 am, Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-5 pm, at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Avenue, Milan, where a Christian wake service will be conducted at 5 pm. Additional visitation will be Monday from 10-11 am, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment services will be 10 am, Tuesday at the Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Dominic Major Seminary, Africa or to St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island. Sonia was born June 7th, 1928 in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the daughter of Joaquin Ribeiro and Inez Vasconcellos Ribeiro. Sonia was a primary school teacher for the Rock Island/Milan School District No. 41 for 35 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Sonia served as a Eucharist Minister at the former St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island. Sonia was active in her church and her faith was a very important part of her life. She loved children and being a part of their lives. She enjoyed teaching and traveling. Survivors include a sister, Millicent Gardner, CA; nieces and nephews, Michael Rebeiro, Teresa Anselm, Judy Ribeiro, Sandra Disch, Donna Pope, David, Philip and Marla Ribeiro; great nieces, Kendra, Julia and Kristina Rebeiro; special friend, Peggy Powell; special families, Chad and Kelly Mayerhofer, their daughters, Kate, Ella and Claire, David and Boni Powell and their son, Joshua.
