Ruth P. Leatherman, 106, of Rock Island died Sunday at Sliver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, February 25th with funeral services at 11:00 am on Friday, February 26th. Both will be held at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Silver Cross Nursing Center.
Ruth was born August 15th, 1903, in Boone, IA, the daughter of William E. Paradise and Jennie Steele Paradise. After graduating from Barnes City High School, Ruth earned a teaching certificate at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Ruth taught school in a one room school house in rural Barnes City before marrying Earl L. Leatherman on December 31, 1924 in Oskaloosa, IA. After raising her family Ruth was employed as a clerk in member services at Modern Woodman retiring in 1968.
Ruth was an active member of Memorial Christian Church where she was a charter member of the Friendly Married Folks class. Ruth was also a member of the Rock Island Women’s Club and an active volunteer for the American Red Cross and Christian Friendliness. Ruth loved to travel. Her most memorable trip was to the Holy Land. Ruth spent most summers at Ten Mile Lake in Minnesota. Ruth was in several bridge and pinochle clubs, enjoyed knitting, crocheting and tatting. Ruth never missed an Iowa Hawkeye basketball game.
Those left to honor Ruth’s memory are sons William Leatherman and Lawrence Leatherman both of Rock Island, daughter-in-law Joyce Leatherman of Moline, 14 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Earl; her brother Virgil; son and daughter-in-law Warren and Helene Leatherman; son Lamont Leatherman; daughters-in-law Bonnie Leatherman and Linda Leatherman.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Silver Cross Nursing Center for all of the love and care they have provided to Ruth through the years. |
