Haskel C. Barrett, 79, of Rock Island, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. Services for Mr. Barrett will be 10 am, Tuesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030-7th Avenue, Rock Island. Visitation will be Monday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military rites will be conducted by the Milan American Legion Post No. 569/200 and the Rock Island VFW Post No 1303. Memorials may be made to the Rock Island Co. Animal Shelter, Moline or to the Quad City Animal Welfare Shelter, Milan. Haskel was born June 9, 1930 in Rogersville, TN the son of James Steven Barrett and Ida Belle Hickman Barrett. He married Shirley A. Hammonds on September 2, 1953 in Gate City, VA. Mr. Barrett worked for Oscar Mayer Co., Davenport, retiring after 26 years. Later he worked for Horst-Zimmerman Auto Dealership, Rock Island and Foreign Car Parts, Davenport. Mr. Barrett was a member First Baptist Church, Rock Island and the Rock Island VFW Post No. 1303. He enjoyed yard work, walking, and watching wrestling on T. V. Haskel especially enjoyed spending time with his grand daughter, Megan and going to her ball games. He was a U. S. Army veteran, who had served in Germany. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a son and daughter in law, Daniel R. and Deborah Barrett, Rock Island; a grand daughter, Megan Kate Barrett, Bettendorf; and several nieces and nephews.
