Edna Elizabeth Van De Gejuchte, 91, of Rock Island, Illinois, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at Trinity Rock Island.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, where a rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Blue Cross Medical Mission Ladies at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Milan, Illinois.
The daughter of Edward Bruneel and Anna Norman-Bruneel-DePaepe, Edna Bruneel was born on August 21, 1918, in Moline, Illinois. She married William Theophil Van De Gejuchte on September 4, 1937 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Rock Island, Illinois. She provided a loving and caring home to her disabled son, Ronald Van De Gejuchte who preceded her in death on December 22, 1965, at the age of eighteen.
During her life, she had been employed at Kwick-On in Rock Island, the John Deere War Assembly in Moline where she was known as “Rosie the Riveter”, and Servus Rubber Company in Rock Island. She moved to Taylor Ridge, Illinois to start farming with her husband in 1945. After his death on November 9, 1994, she moved to Rock Island, Illinois. Her name was entered into the World War II Memorial registry on March 24, 2000.
Edna was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Milan, Wi Lo Bees Club, Blue Cross Medical Mission Ladies, and Legion of Mary. She also belonged to the Cordial Club of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. Cooking, baking, crocheting, and tending her flowers and gardening were all activities she enjoyed. She was a very compassionate, caring, and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother who will be missed by all.
Edna is survived by her daughter, Shirley Elliott of Rock Island, Illinois, grandsons Dannie W. (Nancy) Elliott of Cambridge, Illinois, Dr. Bernie E. Elliott (Rick Baker) of Rock Island, Illinois, great-grandchildren Jason Boos, Jackie Elliott, Kaitie Elliott, Jacob Elliott, Steffanie Gleason, Justin Gleason, Jennie Gleason, Jack Wagher, Jennifer Baker, and Brian Baker, and great-great grandchildren Mackenzie Boos, Nadine Boos, and Airik Boos. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, son Ronald, sister Joann Lawson, and brothers Charles, Joseph, Leonard, and Edward DePaepe.
