Shirley E. Walker, 79, of Rock Island, died Friday July 16, 2010, at her home.
No services are planned. A private family inurnment will be at a later date at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to any Quad-city area animal shelter. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, IL, assisted with arrangements.
Shirley was born on May 17, 1931, in Geneseo, IL, a daughter of James Nary and Jenny Williams Nary.
Shirley was mother to 7 children while she was married to Gayne Robinson; Larry, Karen, David, Vicki, Jayne, Jim and Carol. Later, when she married Robert D. Walker Sr. on Feb. 10, 1970, Bob's own five children were added to the “yours and mine” mix; Sue, Robert Jr., Sheila, Richard and Randy.
She was employed several years at Miller Container.
Her absolute favorite color was red, making it destiny she would became a member of a local Red Hat Ladies club in early 2000. Shirley loved a bargain. Even more, if you were the seller she loved “negotiating” till you finally gave in and “made” it a bargain. She loved excitement, and for several years she and Bob would take cross country trips on their motorcycle, and later in their small motor home.
In her mid 70’s Shirley went on a boat outing with her grandchildren. When jokingly asked if she’d like to try “tubing” she said yes, and did. They pulled her around in that tube for hours with her great-grand kids begging her to get out so they could have a turn.
Shirley had a passionate love for dogs, rescuing several from the shelters over the years. It was common for her to be the home for 4 to 5 dogs at a single time, spoiling them like they were children.
She loved playing the penny slots, generously sharing the “freebie buffet meals” she earned with all of her family and friends.
Surviving are her husband, Robert D. Walker Sr., of Milan; children, Larry Robinson, Fort Worth, TX, Karen Robinson Michael, Davenport, IA, David Robinson, Shreveport, LA, Jayne Robinson Burmeister, LeClaire, IA, James Robinson, Cambridge, IL, Carol Robinson Green, Davenport, and five stepchildren, Sue, Robert Jr., Sheila, Richard, and Randy; 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and other relatives and friends.
Her parents, a daughter, Vicki Robinson, and brothers, Russell, Raymond, and Stanley Nary, preceded her in death.
