Elfriede was born May 5, 1945, in Berlin, Germany. She is the daughter of Franz Allgeier and Maria Haas Allgeier. She married Johann B. Schmalzl in 1976 in Rock Island, IL.

Elfriede was a loving wife and mother. She was self-employed and loved to help her family.

Survivors include her husband, Johann, of Rock sland; daughter and son-in-law, Elvira and Humberto Gonzalez, Rock Island; stepson, Werner Schmalzl, California; grandchildren, Sylvia Slykhuis, Davenport, Michelle Spencer and Antonio Gonzalez, both of Rock Island; six great-grandchildren; three brothers; four sisters; sisters-in-law (and spouses), Margaret (Victor) Clark, Andalusia, and Maryann (Joe) Atnip, Sierra Vista, AZ; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
