Vigil Service: Rosary 2:00 p.m. Sunday July 24, 2011 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, Ill.
Interment: Monday July 25, 2011 at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill.

Peter M. Ortiz, 87, of Rock Island, died Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Trinity Rock Island.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. on Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m.

Mr. Ortiz was born on Sept. 15, 1923 in Bettendorf, a son of Arturo “Andy” and Simona Ramirez Ortiz. He married Mary Sue Lujan on Sept. 25, 1943 in Rock Island. She died Jan. 13, 1983.

Peter worked for 17 years at the J.I. Case Co., Rock Island. He retired from Sivyer Steel, Bettendorf, where he had worked for 24 years and was a union steward.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. He had been a Golden Gloves boxing champion. Peter enjoyed dancing, going for car rides, being with his family, telling stories of his childhood and telling jokes. He had a kind and giving heart. Peter was always there for his family with unconditional love. Truly the best dad ever.

Survivors include his children (and spouses), Pete (Cheryl) Ortiz, Sandra Ortiz, Barbara (Dan) DeSchepper, Dennis (Lori) Ortiz and Karen (Scott) Sheraden; 15 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Ortiz, Rock Falls, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; son, Brian; several brothers and sisters; and special friend, Connie Lopez.
