Richard C. “Dick” VandeWalle, 64, of Rock Island, died Wednesday January 18, 2012 at Trinity, Rock Island, following a brief illness.

Services are 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island. Entombment with military honors, presented by V.V.A. Chapter 299, will be at Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island. Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030-7th Ave., Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to either St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island, or to Trinity Pathway Hospice.

Richard was born June 27, 1947 in Moline, IL, a son of Charles VandeWalle and Helen Lammens VandeWalle. He graduated from Alleman High School, Rock Island, Class of 1965. He married Marilyn J. Tady on May 2, 1970 in Geneseo, IL.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Vietnam.

In earlier years, Dick worked at L & L Clothing, Ametek, and Short Hills Country Club, all of East Moline. He later served as superintendent at Highland Springs, and then with City of Rock Island Parks and Recreation Dept. He then went to work for Deere & Co. While working at Deere & Co., he also owned and operated VandeWalle Stump Removal and worked for Raney Tree Service.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and family, as well as visiting with friends. Dick enjoyed lending a hand to anyone who needed his help. His interests included woodworking, landscaping, history, and a clean vehicle.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn, of Rock Island; children (and spouses), Laurel (Steve) Wassenhove, Muscatine, IA, and John (Brandy) VandeWalle, Rock Island; grandchildren, Payton and Avery Wassenhove, and Addison and Alexander VandeWalle; brother, Tom (Cheryl) VandeWalle, Stuart, FL; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, and one nephew, Jeff VandeWalle.

Grandpa Dick was the best grandpa you could wish for. Careing, loving, understanding. I love him more than words can explain. I will miss him with all my heart. I hope everyone enjoyed there time with my grandpa and remember him i know i do.
