Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday March 28, 2012 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, Ill.
Interment: Private March 29, 2012 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill.

Laurel Hull Schoon, 59, of Rock Island, longtime former teacher, died Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Trinity Rock Island, following a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private family inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family to help with educational and medical expenses for her grandsons, Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, or to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City.

Laurel Hull was born September 18, 1952 in Moline, a daughter of Ralph and Ruth Linder Hull. She married Rick Schoon on August 19, 1984 on the Queen of Hearts Boat.

She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1970. Laurel received a BS in Education from Western Illinois University in 1974 and an MS in Interdisciplinary Studies in 1983, also from Western Illinois University.

Laurel loved kids and loved to teach. She taught her first two years at Washington Junior High in Rock Island instructing typing and general business classes. She retired in 2011, after teaching 35 years in the Orion School District, where she taught high school and middle school business classes. She was the sponsor for the National Honor Society for many years while teaching at Orion High School.

She was a life-time member of the Illinois Education Association and the National Education Association. She was also a member of the Junior Woman’s Club of Rock Island and Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Her favorite times were spent with her children and grandsons.

Survivors include her spouse, Rick; daughter, Katie Schoon, Rock Island; son, Geoff Schoon, Moline; grandsons, Brady and Blake Brunat, Rock Island; sister, Lynn (Roger) Rempe, Moline; brother, Norm (Mimi) Hull, Maitland, Fla.; nieces, Alison, Kristen and Rebecca; and nephew, Andrew. She is also survived by her special friends, Grandma Agnes Babeu, Karin, Chris, Mary, Deb, Robin, Carol, Freddi and Peg. She was preceded in death by her parents.
