Interment: Saturday August 25, 2012 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill.

Leonard W. “Cactus” Robbins, 87, formerly of Milan, died Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.

Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial is at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 12:30 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the American Cancer Society.

Cactus was born April 20, 1925 in Kirkwood, Ill., a son of Harold and Sarah Nichols Robbins. He married Phyllis Rae Husted, May 1, 1949 at South Park Presbyterian Church in Rock Island. She died April 23, 2007.

Cactus was a WW II U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving from 1946 to 1948. He was an aircraft mechanic on the F4U Corsair. He had many great stories of his Marine Corps days.

He was a tool and die maker having worked at many Quad City machine shops. He also maintained his own business having a machine shop in his home.

He enjoyed all sports having played football, softball, basketball and as a member of a bowling league in his younger years. He and his wife also followed Augustana basketball for many years.

He loved traveling and made friends wherever he went. It has been said he never met a stranger and wherever he went there was sure to be someone he knew. Cactus loved to travel and went on many adventures with his buddies. He had a special friendship with several Amish families in Iowa and Wisconsin. Cactus was active for many years in the Confederate Air Force.

Cactus will be deeply missed by his children (and spouses), Jill (Dennis) Carlson, Rock Island, Becky Cosentine, Pekin, Ill., Neal Robbins, East Moline, Ted (Jodi) Robbins, Colona, Terry (Rob) Piatt, Springfield, Tenn., and Craig (Kim) Robbins, Taylor Ridge; grandchildren, Paul and Anne Carlson, Scott (Taylor) Cosentine, Crystal Cosentine, Angie (John) Dellitt, Joshua Robbins, Holly Robbins, Shana Marquez, Megan (Shawn) Bowles, Owen, Cody and Cory Piatt and MacKenzie Robbins; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Earl (Joyce) Robbins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; sister, June Lowery; and brother, Leroy.
