The Lord welcomed home Donna Mae “Gramma Gabby” Benson, 86, of Milan, on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at her residence.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Andalusia. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until service time at the church. Entombment will be at Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Andalusia or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Donna was born on April 13, 1932 in Rock Island, the daughter of John and Mary (Wille) Bush. She married Max E. Benson on April 24, 1954 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan, he preceded her in death in 2002. Donna was a loving and giving person who always enjoyed helping others, especially through her volunteer work at Aledo Nursing Home, Mercer County Hospital and later at Unity Point, Moline. She enjoyed playing cards and dominoes, and loved fishing, especially in Arkansas where her and Max lived for 5 years after his retirement. Her greatest joy was always her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She worked for Rock Island Bank and Trust Co. and Reynolds Grade School. Donna was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Andalusia. In her younger years she was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Den Mother leader for 10 years. Between her and Max they had over 20 years of volunteer work with the Cub Scouts.
Donna is survived by her son, Jim (Barb) Benson, Aztec, NM; daughters, Jeri Benson-Foran and Jeanie Sulouff, both of Milan; son-in-law, Dwayne Farmer, Harrison, AR; grandchildren, Kortni (Glenn) Gehlert, Montebello, VA, Dylan (Erin) Farmer, Sterling, VA, Chelsey (Dave) DeCap, Taylor Ridge, Sarah (Taylor) and Rachel Benson, Aztec, NM, and John Dale Mayhew, Jacksonville, FL; great grandchildren, Kyra, Dayne, Paisley, Stella, Jax, Miles, and Mira; brother, John Bush, Taylor Ridge; and sister, Doris Moffitt, South Whitley, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max; parents; daughter, Judy; and son-in-laws, Jeff Foran and Jeff Sulouff.
