John L. Vallejo, 105, of Rock Island, passed away on November 23rd, 2018 at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Friendship Manor, Rock Island. John was to be 106 years young in 22 days.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10am, on Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 4pm to 7 pm, Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 pm, at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Alleman High School Development Fund.
John was born on Dec. 15, 1912 in Horton, KS. He married Cora Martinez on Jan. 20, 1940, in St. Joseph, MO. John and Cora celebrated marriage together for 71 years.
John with his wife Cora nurtured, taught and loved their large family of 70 souls including his children’s spouses and a great-great grandchild. He was the oldest living parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island, a parishioner for more than 80 years. John will be remembered for his enduring love, emphasis on family, amazing inventiveness, infectious joy, strength and work ethic. John’s positive imprint on so many individuals will insure that his legacy of love and kindness will forever endure.
The family wants to express their sincere thanks to all the staff of Friendship Manor, Silver Cross East, and Hospice Compassus who provided exceptional care to their father. The staff combined professionalism with kindness, concern and respect for the six years of John’s residency.
Survivors include children and spouses, Victoria (Fermin) Cortez, Rock Island, IL, Angelina (Edward) Welsh, Chandler, AZ, Richard (Patricia) Vallejo, Marietta, GA, Gloria (James) Yuncker, Hattiesburg, MS, Thomas (Eileen) Vallejo, Detroit, MI, Rosemarie (Daniel) Sedillo, Bloomfield, NM, Michael (Cindy) Vallejo, Rio Rancho, NM, Daniel (Denise) Vallejo, Milan, IL and David Vallejo, Denver CO, 19 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and 14 siblings.
