Kenneth E. Mourning, Sr.

Kenneth E. Mourning, Sr., 85, of Rock Island, passed away Friday, March 8, 2019 at his home.

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to UnityPoint Hospice. 

Kenneth was born March 5, 1934 in Moline, a son of Allen Sr. and Ethel Leisure Mourning. He graduated from United Township High School, Class of 1952. He married Elinor J. Nugent on June 19, 1954 in Rock Island. 

He was a switchman for the Rock Island Line railroad for over 20 years. He later worked at Wallace’s Garden Center, St. Anthony’s Care Center and Sentry Pool. 

Kenneth was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. He was a “Jack of all Trades” and loved to help his family and friends with any project. He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband and dad. He was a wonderful grandpa and great grandpa to his grandchildren whom he adored. 

He enjoyed fishing, trips to Canada, Minnesota, Las Vegas and Laughlin. Some of his favorite things to do were sitting on his deck at home, tending to his yard, keeping a clean car and caring for his pet cat, “Missy”. 

Suriving are his wife, Elinor, of Rock Island; children, Stephen Mourning, Rock Island, Vicky (Ted)  Kloppenborg, Sherrard, Crystal Ferris, Moline and Kenneth (Diana) Mourning Jr., Rock Island; grandchildren, Amber Mourning, Kenneth Mourning III and Michael Mourning; great grandchildren, Zowie Mourning, Dave Mourning and Kenneth Mourning IV; and many nieces, nephews and other family. 

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Brian Ferris; two brothers, Allen Mourning Jr. and Harold Mourning; and sister, Beverly McCann.
