Gary S. Segal, 80, of Rock Island, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.
Gary was born on August 23, 1943 in Buffalo, NY, the son of Herman and Sarah Segal. He married Randi Richman in Fort Worth, TX on May 31, 1987.
Gary graduated from Rock Island High School in 1961 and Philadelphia Textile in 1966. He served in the Army in Vietnam, was a member of VVA 299 and the Jewish War Veterans. He was employed with Herman's Inc in Rock Island for 48 years. Gary was proud to volunteer his time and contribute to his community by creating scholarships, donating to charity, and serving on several boards. He was past president of the Tri-City Jewish Center, previous board member of the Jewish Federation and Rock Island Hebrew Cemetery Association, as well as an active member in the Rock Island High School class of 1961 scholarship fund. He enjoyed swimming, reading, racquetball, and going to national parks. Gary was an avid Chicago White Sox and Illini fan. He had the pleasure of going to two World Series, the 1984 Olympics, White Sox Fantasy Baseball Camp for 7 years, and the first Field of Dreams game with his family.
He loved being with his family. Those left to cherish Gary's memory include his wife, Randi Segal; daughters, Sarah (Avi) Levine and Rachel (Jacob Grund) Segal; grandchildren, Nathan and Hannah Levine; sister, Judi (Donn) Stroud, and many other family members in which he cared deeply about. His friendships spanned lifetimes. He was loved by many and will be missed.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Burial will be in Hebrew Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Randi and Gary Segal Family Cancer Endowment Fund at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at UI Health Care.
