Obituary

Stanley Harry Coin, 93, lifelong resident of Rock Island, Illinois passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Island. Visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 13, 2023, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island, where a Trisagion (Prayer) service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church or your favorite charity.

Stanley Harry Coin was born on November 9, 1929, to Harry S. Coin and Toula (Papastefanou) Coin. Stan had one older sister, Katherine, and two younger brothers, George and Tasso. He married Kay Bonebrake of Clinton, Iowa, his wife of 65 years, on September 28, 1958.

​He is survived by his wife, Kay, and children: Connie (Jim) Contes, Tempe, Arizona; Cathy Coin, Chicago; Christine (Randy) Smith, Rock Island; and Harry (Paula) Coin, Moline. He has four grandchildren, Laura (Yoni) Fix, Nick (Julie) Brockelman, James Contes, and Madison Smith. He has three step-grandchildren. He has two great-grandchildren, Hudson Perry Fix and Zevik Yaron Fix. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Katherine, and one brother George.

​Stan graduated from Rock Island High School in 1947. He attended the University of Illinois earning an Associate of Arts degree. Stan continued his education earning a B.A. degree in business from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa.

​Stan attributed the family business, Coin Baking Company, as the catalyst for launching his business career. He became the manager of Coin Baking Company, which was sold to Eagles Supermarket, a subsidiary of Lucky Foods, Inc. in 1968. In 1978, Mr. Coin was promoted to regional manager of the Midwestern Food Division of Lucky Stores and, in 1979, he became President of the Division. In 1968, he was one of the original founders of American Bank & Trust where he served as President and Chairman of the Board for over a half century.

​Stan was on the Board of Directors of Franciscan Hospital, serving as Chairman; the Rock Island Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Executive Committee of the Chamber. He was also on the Boards for Junior Achievement; St. Anthony's Care Center, Rock Island; Martin Luther King Center; the Rock Island YMCA; and the Foundation for Crippled Children. In addition, Stan was Chairman of the Rock Island Housing Commission.

​Mr. Coin has been a Rotarian for over 75 years, serving a term as President, receiving the Service Above Self award, and being recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was chosen as Mardi Gras King for the Rock Island Junior Board. He has been a member of the Order of AHEPA; Short Hills Country Club; Shriners, Trio Lodge #57; Scottish Rite Mason; the Rock Island Booster Club; and Leadership 100 of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Stan also served as President of St. George Greek Orthodox Church where he has been an active, lifelong member. He began the Stanley H. Coin Scholarship Fund for Business available to Rock Island High School graduates and spearheaded a multi-million dollar fundraiser for Trinity Medical Center.

​Stan loved playing golf and made a hole-in-one when he was 70. His SOMA membership, and serving as President of the organization, brought much enjoyment to his life along with playing several years in the Pro-Am portion of the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his family and friends. Stan felt great satisfaction serving in various organizations where he could make a difference, giving back to the community, and helping those in need. Stan Coin was an honorable and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, son, and friend.
