Alan “Al” W. Nordstrom, 76, of Silvis, IL, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, IA.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory in Milan. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 30, 2026, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Milan, followed by burial at Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the church or the Milan Christian Food Pantry.
Al was born on January 30, 1950, to Glenn and Virginia (Sharer) Nordstrom in Davenport, IA. He grew up in East Moline and graduated from United Township High School. He attended Bradley University and the University of Iowa as an undergraduate before earning his master’s degree in computer science from Purdue University.
In 1974, Al began his career at Deere & Company as a programmer. His work included developing programs for the lasers used to cut parts on the production line and designing a truck routing program to make deliveries more efficient. In his later years, he particularly enjoyed his position in the pension department, where he helped the company with their investments. He retired in 2011.
On July 29, 1972, Al married Kerry Grouell in Ida Grove, IA. They made their home in Taylor Ridge, where they raised their two daughters. Al and Kerry were active members of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where Al served as an elder and president of the board. He also volunteered at the Milan Christian Food Pantry, where Al was treasurer for the last 13 years.
Al was a lifelong Chicago Bears fan who remained loyal to his team through the ups and downs of every season.
An avid cyclist, Al participated in RAGBRAI many times and completed several long-distance rides, including coast-to-coast trips on the TransAmerica Trail and rides along the Mississippi River from Bemidji, Minnesota, to Louisiana. He kept a detailed, though incomplete, spreadsheet of his cycling miles, with a final recorded total of 54,975.1 miles. Even while battling cancer, he rode 200 miles in his final year.
Al is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kerry; daughters, Laura (Alex) Welch and Cindy (Adam) Hamerlinck; grandchildren, Austin Welch, Charlie Dayton, and Julian Dayton; sister, Darla (Bud) Pettit; brother-in-law, Steve Grouell; sister-in-law, Robin Grouell; and numerous nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and nephew, Lance Pettit.
