Alice E. Henneman, 93, of Rock Island, died on Friday, March 27, 2015 at UnityPoint Health Trinity Rock Island.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Burial is at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Friendship Manor or First Lutheran Church.
Alice Oltmanns was born in a farmhouse in Nelson, Ill., on January 3, 1922, the daughter of Louis and Minnie Ufkin Oltmanns. She married Richard G. Henneman on September 7, 1952 in Rock Falls. He preceded her in death on September 28, 1996.
Alice was a US Army veteran, having served as a 2nd Lieutenant nurse in the Pacific Theatre in WW II.
She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Katherine Shaw Bethea Nursing School in Dixon, Ill, with further studies at the University of Minnesota and Cook County Hospital. She worked as a clinical nursing instructor at Katherine Shaw Bethea and Moline Public Hospital, where she also served as a nursing supervisor. She also provided home nursing services.
Alice was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church in Rock Island and was deeply involved in the life of the church. She served on the Church Council, and was President of the Women's Association, along with many other activities.
She was also involved in a number of other civic and service organizations, including King's Daughters, PTA, Rainbow Missionary Circle, the Augustana College Endowment Society, PEO, Friends of the Rock Island Library and had been a Cub Scout den leader. She volunteered for many years at the Rock Island Public Library Branch 30/31 and was a dedicated reading tutor for the Rock Island school system. She enjoyed classical music, regularly attending QC Orchestra concerts. She traveled extensively with her family, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and playing cards with her 500 card club. Alice treasured her wide circle of friends and family and loved welcoming people into her home.
Alice is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Mary A. Henneman and Patrick Schumacher, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard L. Henneman and Dr. Janet Fath, and grandsons, Lucas and Nate Henneman, all of Atlanta, Ga.; step-grandchildren, Betsy (Joe) Bailey and Matthew (Dawn) Schumacher; and step great grandchildren, Joey and Colin Bailey. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, and two brothers.
