IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Anna K.
Goldman
April 26, 1922 – March 16, 2016
Anna K. Goldman, 93, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the Lighthouse, Silvis.
Private graveside services were held on Thursday afternoon at the Hebrew Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Congregation Beth Israel at the Tri-City Jewish Center or The Quad City Animal Welfare Center (Make checks payable to Humane Society of Rock Island County - tax ID number 36-2952894).
Born April 26, 1922 in Davenport, the daughter of Abraham and Manya/Mary Melamed Katz, she graduated from Davenport High school before attending business college in Davenport. Orphaned as a minor, she and her sister Bertha ran Katz Grocery on the corner of East 15th and Iowa Streets in Davenport until she married her sweetheart, Stanley D. Goldman, of Rock Island, on Aug. 24, 1947.
Fascinated with planes, Ann took flying lessons before she could drive a car, making her first solo flight in a Piper Cub on November 25, 1945 out of Cram Field in Davenport.
For decades, Ann stood next to or in full support of Stanley's efforts to keep the lights on in Downtown Rock Island.
Ann had an indomitable spirit, finding each day better than the next. She loved animals and maintained a menagerie of wild critters which visited her daily for the pans of food and water she prepared and placed in the back yard at the family home on 35th Avenue for 50 years.
Ann and Stanley were members of the Tri-City Jewish Center. She is survived by her children, Connie (Kelin) Gersick, Hamden, Conn.; son, Robert Goldman (Miriam Alfonso), Mill Valley, Calif.; grandchildren, Andrew and Sarah, Rebecca and Lily, three great-grandchildren, Jack, Gwen and Lia.
She was preceded in death by Stanley; her brothers, Charles and Isadore Katz, and her sister, Bertha Soodhalter.
