Anne F. MacBurney, 90, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Monday, Feb. 29, 2016, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
A Requiem Mass will be said at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Trinity Anglican Church, 1818 6th Ave., Rock Island, Ill. There will be no visitation. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, Ill., is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Anglican Church, 1818 6th Ave., Rock Island, IL 61201 or to Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5022, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5022.
Anne Farnsworth was born March 31, 1925, in Stamford, Conn., the daughter of Augustus P. and Julia Shepard Farnsworth. She graduated from Greenwich Academy, Greenwich, Conn., and Smith College, Northampton, Mass. She received a Master of Arts degree from Boston University School of Theology and practiced marriage counseling for a number of years in Lebanon, N.H., and Davenport.
In 1946, she married W. Norton Grubb and they went immediately to Santiago, Chile. Her first son, Norton was born there. In another move son, Page was born in Salvador and they lived also in Guatemala. Son, James was born in Stamford, and the family ended up living in Bristol, R.I., where her husband died in 1959. As a widow at the age of 34, she moved to Hanover, N.H., where her parents had a summer home.
Subsequently, on Feb. 20, 1965, she married Father Edward H. MacBurney who was Rector of St. Thomas' Church, Hanover. He later adopted her three sons. Bishop MacBurney survives her.
They lived in Hanover until 1973, when they moved to Davenport, Iowa, where he was Dean of Trinity Cathedral. In 1988, Father MacBurney was consecrated the Bishop of Quincy, Ill., and they moved to Peoria, Ill. Since that time, sons, Page, died of cancer in Bettendorf, and Norton of a heart problem while in Taiwan. Son, James lives with his wife, Anne and their son, Thomas in Ellicott City, Md. Norton's wife Erica, and their two children, Hilary and Alex (Trisha); and great-granddaughter, Zoe, live in Berkley, Calif.
Anne enjoyed traveling and was a great walker. Highlights included New Zealand, Poland, Indonesia and the British Isles. She began walking alone, but latterly was joined by Anne Johnson, Paddy Blackman and Helen McAlister.
