IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Anne R
Mcglynn
June 29, 1952 – June 2, 2024
Anne McGlynn, 71, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2024, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity, Rock Island.
Anne was born June 29, 1952, in Evanston, IL, the daughter of David Edward and Cicely Burt (Hicks) Ryan. She attended Augustana College in Rock Island and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1974. While at Augustana, she met the love of her life, Fred McGlynn, and joined him as a founding member of Auggie's "Lotta Freaks" social group, a spirited band of buddies who participated in intramural sports and social events ;) in college.
Shortly after graduation, she and Fred married on July 27, 1974, in Grayslake, IL. They shared a beautiful 50-year marriage dedicated to each other, their family, and friends. That same year she also began her career at Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Company as their first female accountant. She remained there in various roles until 2000, when she moved on to Exelon Corp. for the next seven years. This gave them the opportunity to return to the Chicago suburbs, reconnect with their family and Chicago friends, and make many more memories. After a few years, however, Fred and Anne realized how much they loved their lives in the Quad Cities and returned to MidAmerican Energy in 2008 before officially retiring in 2014.
Throughout her life, including her retirement, she and Fred remained extremely active and involved in the community. She was an active member of Rock Island Rotary, an organization dedicated to service, ethics, and building goodwill and peace around the world. She became President during their 100-year anniversary, was awarded Rotarian of the Year, and became a Paul Harris Fellow. During this time, she also served as the financial secretary of the St. Joseph the Worker House Association in Rock Island. She later joined Christian Care, an organization that provides safe shelter, support, and resources in the community. All the while, she and Fred were active members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Island, a community of members who served as our extended family in Rock Island.
In her down time, she enjoyed watching Sarah and Ellen play outdoor sports and served as the scorekeeper for the Johannas Bus, O'Melia's, and Black Hawk Bank Girls Softball teams. Not only did she keep score, but long before sabermetrics were popularized by Brad Pitt, she provided in-game strategy tips like "MOVE BACK BECKY" and was a key factor in the overall defensive strategy. She continued to follow tennis and attended the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament with Ellen for the past 10 years. She also enjoyed (to the degree possible) watching and attending Chicago Cubs games, boat rides on the Mississippi River, and annual trips to Puerta Villarta, Riviera Maya, and helped meticulously plan international trips with the Freaks. On their return to the QC, she became an active member of the RIFAC Mermaids Swim Team, a group of women who celebrated lifelong fitness and frivolity.
Anne could run circles around all of us and executed plans with grace, pleasure, and ease. She was dedicated to helping others no matter the circumstances, and always wanted the best for others. Her attention to detail, eager spirit, and enjoyment of life inspired all of us to do more, serve others, support women, and seek the good in each other. Her efforts are imprinted on our hearts and remain our guiding light during this time. We all loved her, and she knew it. In turn she loved us all right back. Those left to specially cherish her memory are her husband, Fred; children, Sarah McGlynn (Shawn Kilty), Ellen McGlynn; siblings David, Thomas (Sucoro), William (Barbara) and James (Julie) Ryan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cicely and David, and her brother Stephen.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Services will be held at 10:00am, on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at St John's Lutheran Church, 4501 7th Ave, Rock Island, IL 61201. A burial will take place at a later date in Chicago, and the McGlynns plan to host a party celebrating her life in the future.
Flowers are welcome, however in lieu of flowers, we believe Anne would appreciate donations to St. John's or RI Rotary in her name. The family has set up a link to donate to Rotary here: Donations in Honor of Anne McGlynn .
