Barbara Hubbard Wheelan, 89, of Rock Island, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Anglican Church, 1818 6th Ave., Rock Island. Burial is at the Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Anglican Church, Rock Island.
Barbara Hubbard was born Oct. 6, 1925 in Rock Island, the daughter of Clifford L. and Olive Skelton Hubbard. She married William K. "Bill" Wheelan on June 17, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island. He died March 19, 1993.
Barbara graduated from the Villa de Chantal School for Girls, Rock Island, and attended the University of Illinois, Champaign.
She was involved in many civic and community organizations including, the Quad City Symphony Orchestra Guild, the Visiting Nurse Association, and the Junior Board. Barbara was a former president of the Rock Island Library Board of Trustees and was responsible for directing the last major renovation of the main library in 1985. She also served on the Rock Island Library Foundation Board of Trustees and the Steepmeadow Club board of directors. She was a long-time member of the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club and the Davenport Outing Club.
Barbara was a gifted seamstress and did beautiful needlework, her talents were much in evidence at Trinity Anglican Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. She enjoyed playing Bridge, reading and doing crossword puzzles. Barbara was a devoted grandmother known lovingly as GaGa.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, William H. "Hub" and Holly Wheelan, Carmel, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Edward Dumas, Rensselaer, Ind.; grandchildren, Matthew (Richelle) Dumas, Zionsville, Ind., Paul (Michelle) Dumas, Carmel, Ind., Stephen (Rachael) Dumas, Carmel, Ind., William Wheelan, New York City, and Grace Wheelan, Los Angeles, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Sophia, Jacob, Julia and Thomas Dumas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; and brother, Robert Hubbard.
