Dr. Betty Klein Whitted, 90, died peacefully in Rock Island on May 14, 2014. Services for Betty will be 11 am, Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alleman High School or St. Pius X Catholic Church, both of Rock Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family. Betty was born on February 26, 1924 in Rock Island, the daughter of Emil and Theresa Klein. A highly educated woman, Betty graduated from Marycrest College with BA and MA in education, and was bestowed her PhD from Walden University. Betty spent her adult years as an elementary teacher. She taught at Briar Bluff and Erie School districts retiring in 1980. Mert and Betty spent their retirement days traveling the world. Betty and Merton M. Whitted married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island in 1948. With Betty at Mert's side during his five terms as Mayor in Geneseo, Betty gave countless hours volunteering in civic organizations to improve life in Geneseo. Organizations included Columbian Club, contributing author for City Chatter, summer Music Festivals and others. Under Betty's direction a state award for community service was bestowed. Betty was instrumental in establishing Friends of WQPT Public TV and was a supporter of the United Way. Betty's deep catholic faith kept her active at St Pius Catholic Church as lector, religious education teacher and Eucharistic minister as well a member of the parish council. Memberships included St. Pius X Catholic Church Altar and Rosary Society, Daughters of Isabella, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Allouez Council No. 658 Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma (teachers honors sorority), Moline American Legion Auxiliary Post 246 and Catholic Social Services Board. Recipient of the St Ambrose University Honorary 2003 Award. Betty was an anonymous benefactor to many. She is survived by her son, Dr. Michael (Kathy ) J. Whitted of St. Charles; grandchildren, Michael, Lauren and Matthew; as well as several nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Merton; parents; sister, Mary Klein Rommel; and a brother, Robert Klein.
