Obituary

Billy D. Nixon, 87, of Rock Island, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015 at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.

Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial is at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church, Rock Island.

Billy was born June 17, 1928 in Staunton, Ill., the son of Elgen and Alice Gray Nixon. He married Lois J. Nielsen on July 21, 1950 in Rock Island.

He worked as a supervisor in the machine shop at the Rock Island Arsenal.

Billy was a U.S. Army Korean Conflict veteran. He a member of Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church, Rock Island and had been a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed camping, traveling to his grandchildren's events and was a St. Louis Cardinal Fan.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lois; son and daughter-in-law, David and Cindy Nixon, Springfield, Ill.; daughters and son-in-law, Denise Nixon, Rock Island, and Lisa and Patrick McFarland, Rock Island; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sister and brother-in-law, Norma Jean and Kenneth Downing, Rock Island.
