Blanche Weindruch, 102, formerly of Rock Island, IL, Bettendorf, IA, and Scottsdale, AZ., died of natural causes at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines, on Friday, May 15, 2015.
Funeral services will be 11 am, Monday at Congregation Beth Israel at the Tri City Jewish Center in Rock Island. Interment will be in the Hebrew Cemetery, Rock Island. There is no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Himan and Blanche Weindruch Memorial Fund at Congregation Beth Israel at the Tri City Jewish Center, Rock Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family.
Blanche Kleinerman was born March 25, 1913, in Starokonstantinov, Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union, the daughter of Frank and Clara Kleinerman. They emigrated to the United States in 1921 and settled in Rock Island.
She was a graduate of Rock Island High School and married Himan Weindruch on June 21, 1931, at the Blackhawk Hotel in Davenport, Iowa. She and Himan raised four children, and found time to be active in several Jewish community organizations. She served as president of the Beth Israel Sisterhood, Pioneer Women, Brandeis Woman, and B'nai B'rith Women. She also was a member of Esther and Phillip Bernick Auxiliary of the Hebrew Theological College, Skokie, IL.
She enjoyed playing bridge and mah jongg with friends, bowled in the B'nai B'rith women's league, and attended the Tri-City Symphony often.
In 1979, she and Himan moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., and after Himan passed away in 1983, Blanche remained in Scottsdale, living independently and welcoming visits from friends and family until returning to the midwest at age 95. She lived with her grandchildren Bobbi and Nashi Khalastchi for two years before moving into the Jewish Life Center.
Survivors include her brother David Kleinerman, Northbrook, Ill.; daughter Shirlee (Jim) Marcovis, West Des Moines; sons Harry (Maxine) Weindruch, Scottsdale; Larry (Judy) Weindruch, Palatine, Ill.; and Michael (Debbie) Weindruch, Bettendorf; grandchildren Bobbi (Nashi) Khalastchi, West Des Moines; Frank (Janel) Marcovis, Clive; David Marcovis, West Des Moines; Sara (Andy) Poticha, Northbrook, Ill.; Rachel (Jimmy) Glickman, Highland Park, Ill.; Hannah Weindruch and Kelsey Weindruch, Bettendorf; great-grandchildren Jennifer (Phil) Blumberg, West Des Moines; Daniel Khalastchi, Iowa City; Dr. Karen (Malcolm) Marcovis Goodwin, Oakland, Calif.; Mike Marcovis, Des Moines; Jeff Marcovis, St. Paul, Minn; Abigail and Brandon Poticha, Northbrook; Jessica and Adam Glickman, Highland Park; and great-great grandchildren Mia and Zara Blumberg and Jackson Marcovis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Mary (the late Samuel) Specthrie, brother Rabbi Alvin (the late Estelle) Kleinerman, and sister-in-law Dolores "Cookie" Kleinerman.
