"Billie" Peterson

Carene M. "Billie" Peterson, 99, of Moline, died Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf. A Requiem Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Anglican Church, Rock Island. A memorial visitation will be from 9 - 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Inurnment will be private at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made in care of the Youth Fund at Trinity Anglican Church, Rock Island, or the American Cancer Society. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family.
Billie Wolter was born in Rock Island on July 17, 1915, a daughter of Ben and Bessie Mosher Wolter. She was a 1933 graduate of Rock Island High School and worked at the Arsenal Clock Tower upon graduation. She married Robert Peterson on September 4, 1937.
Billie was employed for 30 years as a bookkeeper for the former Mary Moore Church Linens, Davenport. She also worked for Drs. Clark, Stockdale and Burgess, Rock Island, and later was office manager for Dr. Donovan Stiegel and Dr. James Duesman for 27 years retiring at age 76.
Billie was a long-time member of Trinity Church, having served as church secretary for many years as well as being on the Vestry and Out-Reach Committee, was a member of St. Anne's Guild and Triangle Club and was treasurer of the United Thank Offering and Women of the Church. She also served on several Diocesan Committees of the Episcopal Church. Mrs. Peterson was a life member of the International Order of King's Daughters and Sons, first vice-president and treasurer of Rock Island City Union Board, a member of Victory Circle of King's Daughters, Moline Pilot Club, a former volunteer at Call for Action, volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society and a RSVP Senior Volunteer.
Billie was truly a member of "The Greatest Generation," possessing a wonderful work ethic and generous spirit. She sewed and smocked lovely dresses when her daughters were small and later in life created Halloween costumes and doll clothes and doll bedding for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed traveling and went on numerous bus tours and also trips to Hawaii and Europe. She was an avid reader, sometimes reading three books simultaneously. Eating dark chocolate everyday was routine.
Billie loved nature, history, and her country, proudly displaying the American flag every day.
Cooking and baking were her passions and her cherry pies and coffee cakes were legendary. For years she gave of her time and talents, and particularly enjoyed the camaraderie and activities of Pilot Club. She was still volunteering at age 92, driving cancer patients to their treatments. She enjoyed a few trips to the casinos and was a Cubs fan to the end.
Survivors include: her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Richard Klimstra, Quincy, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Christine Peterson, Plymouth, Minn.; grandchildren, Marcy Kozlowski and Christine DeWild both of Moline, Beth (Stephen) Keck and Amy (Joe) Rudd, both of St. Louis, Mo., Kristofor (Mandy) Peterson, Lenexa, Kan. and Angie Peterson, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Cory (Amanda) Vincent, Ashley Tilton, Adam Gripp, Jada and Chad DeWild, Abigail and Andrew Rudd, Emily Keck, Logan and Gavin Peterson, Jalon Gilbert and Athena VanWert; and great-great-grandchildren, Chasity, Kaden and Asher Gripp, Thalia Rosas, Kaiya Alvarez and Alexandria Vincent.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Sue Brackevelt, sister, Jane Felske and brother, Ben Wolter.
The family would like to thank the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House staff for their love and care for Billie.
