Obituary

Carol E. Greenwood, 95, of Milan, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa. Born on October 5, 1929, in Denver, Colorado, Carol was the beloved daughter of Harry and Dorothea Hinrichs Balster.

Carol's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, family, and adventure. She grew up on a farm near Sterling, Illinois, where she graduated from Sterling High School in 1947. On March 1, 1952, she married the love of her life, Wesley "Wes" Greenwood, and together they raised four wonderful children. Carol dedicated 27 years of her life to the Illinois Department of Revenue, retiring in 1990, yet her greatest legacy lies in the love and commitment she showed to her family.

A funeral service honoring her life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 9:30 am at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 201 E. 4th Avenue, Milan, Illinois. Friends and family are invited to come together for visitation on Friday, May 30, 2025, from 4-6 pm at the funeral home. Following the service, Carol will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery in Rock Island.

Carol had a zest for life that radiated through her passions for traveling—whether it was on their cherished boat or during winter excursions in their motor home to Arizona. She took joy in gardening, dancing, and cooking for the hunters who visited their hunting lodge in South Dakota, further reflecting her nurturing spirit.

She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: her children Lesley (Julie) Greenwood, Jan (Cal) Heiar, and Gail (Kevin) Mueller; her five beloved grandchildren, J.R. (Michelle) Greenwood, Michael Greenwood, Paul (Jenny) Heiar, Scott Heiar, and Carolyn (Josh) Koeller; as well as her adored great-grandchildren, Madison and Kaitlyn Greenwood, Bailey and Brady Heiar and Beckett and Ryan Koeller.

Carol was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Wesley, her parents, her dear daughter, Brenda Greenwood, and her sisters, Beatrice Pillmore and Helen Balster. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers at Friendship Manor, especially Nuku Lamkin and her team, as well as the compassionate staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
