IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carol Louise
(Johnson) Peterson
June 23, 1923 – September 21, 2016
Carol Louise Johnson Peterson, 93, of Rock Island, Ill., died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 at the Silver Cross Health and Rehab Pavilion at Friendship Manor, Rock Island.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation is 3 to 5 pm Sunday at the church. Private burial will be at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Augustana College, or to Friendship Manor.
Carol Louise Johnson was born June 23, 1923 in East Moline, Ill., a daughter of David O. and Lilly Ahl Johnson. She married Calvin C. Peterson on June 8, 1946 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, East Moline in a double ceremony with her sister, Dorothea and Maurice Kalen. Carol and Cal were college sweethearts having met at a sorority event in Oct. 1942. Carol transferred from Augustana College to the University of Illinois and upon Cal's return from the Marines they were married. They celebrated their 25th Anniversary in Lucerne, Switzerland, with her sister and brother-in-law, their 50th in Bettendorf, Iowa, with family and friends and in June, their 70th at Friendship Manor.
Carol graduated with honors from the University Of Illinois School Of Music in 1945, where she participated in the University's Chorus and Glee Clubs. She accepted a position on the faculty of Augustana College teaching piano and music appreciation. Carol taught from 1945 to mid-1947, leaving to care for her new baby.
The Peterson family moved to several locations during Cal's career with Deere & Co., in order for Cal to serve different assignments. The couple started in Moline, Ill., and later moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, Heidelberg, Germany, Waterloo, Iowa, Bettendorf, Iowa and in 1988, settling in Rock Island.
Carol was a devoted wife and mother. She raised three sons and saw each of them achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, and also saw each earn advanced degrees in the colleges of their choice. Carol had a deep faith in God and enjoyed playing the organ, piano and directing the choirs in several of the churches she belonged to in her early years. Her music listening preferences were classical artists and symphonies. However, if there was a party and a piano was present, singing would break out with Carol playing requests of show tunes and American ballads. If you didn't know the title of the song, but could hum a few bars, Carol was able to pick it up and accompany the singer.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, the WELCA organization of the church, Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Kings Daughters and Sons Friendship Circle 06', PEO Chapter KT and the American Guild of Organists. Carol was also a member of the PI KAPPA LAMBDA (Honorary Musical Fraternity), Ladies Musical Improvement (LMI), Waterloo, Sigma Alpha Iota (Professional Music Fraternity) and Crow Valley Golf Club.
She is survived by her husband, Cal; sons, Thomas C. Peterson, Waterloo, and Dr. Leland D. Peterson, Moline; daughter-in-law, Joan Peterson, State College, Penn.; granddaughter, Dr. Emily Ann Peterson Steward; great grandchildren, Mia Grace Steward and Adriana Joy Steward; sister-in-law, Hazel E. Johnson, Phoenix, Ariz.; cousin, Shirley Bendixon, Wyoming, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Bruce M. Peterson; brother, Dr. Chester Johnson; and sister, Dorothea Ahl Kalen.
