Cleo Malires "Calliopi" age 85 of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Rock Island, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2016.

The family will receive friends and family for visitation from 10 o'clock until 11 o'clock on Friday, September 23, 2016 with a prayer service at 11 o'clock at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 – 7th Avenue, Rock Island.  Following the prayer service, burial services will be held at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 2930 31st Ave, Rock Island, IL 61201.

She was born on April 22, 1931 in Elm Creek, Nebraska. Cleo was raised on a farm in Nebraska and was one of nine children, the daughter of Mary and Theodore Spurgetis.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William "Bill" Malires and infant daughter, Cassandra Malires. Survivors include her son, Peter James Malires (Monica), son Michael William Malires (Nancy); grandchildren, Michael James Malires (Christie), Ryan Dobrin (Sloan), Kylie Wangenheim (Erik); great grandsons, Carter and Cooper Malires and brothers, Nick and Jim Spurgetis.

Cleo and Bill married in 1951 and in 1968 the family moved from Rock Island, Illinois to Atlanta and maintained the same residence in Buckhead for 48 years. Cleo was dedicated to her family and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Cleo was a team mother for NYO and actively involved with Chastain Park sports activities. During her 25 years she was a dedicated financial accountant for Newcomb & Boyd an Atlanta an engineering and consulting firm.

Cleo's passion was cooking especially during the holidays where the family enjoyed authentic Greek food for Christmas, Easter and other occasions. Her dedication and commitment to her husband, sons, grandchildren, great grandsons and daughters-in-law was her life. Cleo was a truly selfless woman, not only to her family but to her faith. Cleo attended the Greek Church every Sunday. She was a woman of kindness, generosity, wisdom, compassion and was deeply loved and will be missed by her entire family.
