Cleyon E. Schafer, 91, of Bettendorf, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at his home.

Funeral services are 11 am Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport.  Burial is at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation is 4:30 to 7:00 pm Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church.  Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island is assisting the family.  Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to Camp Shalom, both of Davenport.

Cleyon was born Nov. 5, 1924 in Aledo, Ill., a son of Charles and Irene Pursell Schafer.  He married Susan I. 'Sue" Nehlsen on Apr. 16, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church.  She died Nov. 17, 2014.

He had worked as a manager at the former International Harvester Corp. East Moline Works.  Following his retirement from I.H., he worked for Tri-City Fabricating.

Cleyon was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran.  He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.   He enjoyed reading, traveling, spending winters in Florida and especially loved his family and being with them and his friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Wynne Schafer, Davenport, John Schafer and Sue Ellingson, Madison, Wis., Jeffrey and Marilee Schafer, Eldridge, and Dan and Margaret Schafer, Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Eric, Tara, Michael, Shawn, Chad, Kirk and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Eli, Luke, Benjamin, William and Matilda; and his sister, Ardith Schafer, Rock Island.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue; and ten brothers and sisters.
