Visitation will be from 12-1 pm Friday in the Green Room at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Face masks and social distancing will be required. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made in care of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Island or Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline. Colette was born in East Moline on September 30, 1922, a daughter of George and Angeliki Doulias Davelis. She married Theodore J. Spurgetis on April 28, 1946 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in East Moline. He preceded her in death on February 15, 1993.
A graduate of United Township High School in 1940 she went to work at Desaulniers & Co. in Moline until the birth of their first son then remained at home to care for her family. When their four children were all in school, she volunteered and later worked at the Villa de Chantal School in Rock Island about 10 years until the school closed in 1979. She then worked part-time for Dimitri Wine & Spirits, Rock Island, turning full-time as an office clerk for 10 years.
Colette volunteered for the Red Cross during World War II, and at Moline Public Hospital and Easter Seals in Rock Island.
Her memberships included Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, St. George Greek Orthodox Church, and the Philoptochos Society of St. George, serving as president. She was a choir member from 10 years of age at Assumption and St. George, a Sunday school director at St. George, and Sunday school teacher for 40 years. She enjoyed the many projects and activities at her church over the decades. She was truly a "good and faithful servant."
In her golden years she enjoyed flower gardening and baking pastries at home, holiday get togethers, and was a relentless crossword puzzler from the comfort of her easy chair. She could never pass up a good John Wayne western on TV.
Her grandchildren and great-granddaughter were a great joy to her and kept her active. She loved her family, her many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, her church family, and her neighbors too.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, James (Sue) Spurgetis, Jon Spurgetis, Angela Spurgetis and Andrew Spurgetis, all of Rock Island; grandchildren, Nikolaos (Sonja) Spurgetis, Bloomington, Ind., Anastasia (Adam) Cook, Indianapolis, Ind. and Theodore Spurgetis, Indianapolis, Ind.; and great-granddaughter, Nikoletta (Nika) Cook.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Andrew (Stella) Davelis and Tom (Efthemia) Davelis, sisters, Eleni Davelis (Argos, Greece), Florence (Harry) Zanfes and Sophia (Stelio) Katsis (Sioux City, IA), and Eleni Davelis (East Moline); sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and spouses, Martha and Louis Gust, Dick and Ella Spurgetis, Mary Spurgetis and Steve and Margit Spurgetis.
