Dale A. Grabau, 85, of Rock Island, died Monday, March 24, 2014 at UnityPoint Health-Trinity, Rock Island. Services will be at 10 am Saturday in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 3300 24th St., Rock Island. Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 pm at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made in care of Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the Rock Island Kiwanis Club.
Dale was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on October 7, 1928, a son of Arthur and Hilda Schirm Grabau. He married Lois Austin on March 9, 1951. They had four sons together before they divorced in 1965. Dale married Irene L. Hennenfent, of Roseville, Ill. on February 7, 1970.
Dale graduated from Rock Island High School in 1946. He spent 35 years of his career as a designer of high production tools and special machines for N.A.S.A., Quad City Engineering and John Deere.
Dale was very active in sports. He was in the Rock Island Jr. Baseball program and American Legion for 23 years. Dale was an avid bowler. He bowled in leagues for over 50 years, bowling one perfect game. He was also an avid New York Yankee supporter since the mid 40's.
Dale received the Key Man Award from the Rock Island Jaycees and received the George J. Hixson Award from the Rock Island Noon Kiwanis Club of which he had been a member since 1996. Dale was a member at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Island. He had served as a past Sunday school teacher , chairman of the church foundation and chairman of the congregation.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Grabau, Rock Island; sons (and spouses), Scott (Lynn) Grabau, Westminster, Colo., Jeffrey Grabau, Port Byron and Brian (Lisa) Grabau, Fla.; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kimberly and Tony Grabau; great-granddaughter, Presley Grabau; and sister, Dalene (Wayne) Boltz, Keokuk, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Douglas.
