Obituary

Darrell "Derrick" Anthony Rice, Sr. , 53, of East Moline, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2021, at Genesis Medical Center, Silvis.

Private live-streamed services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island, (and may be viewed at wheelanpressly.com/live stream Rock Island). Visitation for family and friends will be 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Those attending are to observe public gathering guidelines regarding wearing of face masks and social distancing.  Memorials may be made to the family.

Derrick, affectionately known as "Ice Dawg," was born April 30, 1967, in Rock Island, the son of Bertha Mae and Raze Rice, and James Taylor.  He was joined in marriage to Carol Myers.  From this union two children were born: Ishia and DJ.  Derrick later went on to have another son, his second namesake, Darrell "Anthony" Rice, Jr.  Derrick enjoyed traveling, modeling his clothes and jewelry, and entertaining his friends, family and even strangers.  He was a member of Gaines Chapel AME Church, East Moline.

Surviving are his fiancée, Rita Cunningham, East Moline; namesake sons, Darrell "Anthony" Rice, Jr., Rock Island, and Darrell Anthony "DJ" Rice, Jr., Augusta, GA; daughter, Ishia (Alonzo) Brown, Columbia, SC; grandchildren: Ka'Marion, Lauren, Darrell III, Zoey, Alonzo Jr., and Kamari; sisters and brothers (and spouses), Gail Fulton, Rock Island; Shirley (Tony) Henderson, Davenport; Arthur (Wanda) Rice, Columbus, OH; Billie Rae (David) Glidewell, Milan; Ruth Taylor, Mark (Priscilla) Taylor, Sr., and Rosemary Taylor, Rock Island;  sister-in-law, Mary Bursey, Rock Island; aunts: Ruby Miles and Annette Pernell (Rock Island), and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Skylah Rice; sisters: Debra Rice, Regena Taylor; brothers: Willie Bursey, Dail Rice, Sidney Rice, James E. Taylor, Jr., William (Billy) Taylor, Fred Taylor, Charles Taylor; sister-in-law, Oleva Calvert Rice, and brother-in-law, Larry Fulton.
