David R. Penry, 87, of Rock Island, died Monday, April 28, 2014 at Unity Point Health Trinity, Rock Island. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rock Island with visitation one hour prior to services. Cremation rites have been accorded and private inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to Unity Point Hospice.David was born on November 13, 1926 to Roy and Matilda Sexsmith Penry in Moline, IL. He married Ruth Cann on October 1, 1948 in Granite City, IL.
His primary vocation was in route sales; but David ended his full employment with Leslie Paper Co. as their warehouse supervisor, where he put his considerable organizational skills to good use. After retirement he continued to work various part time jobs; most notably with the Rock Island Police Department as a school crossing guard at Eugene Field Elementary.
David was a member of the Rock Island Conservation Club, past member of the Moose Lodge and a longtime member of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church where he served on Session and as a Deacon. He bowled for many years on leagues at Milan Lanes and at Town and Country. He also was very proud of being a member of the Rock Island Police Department's Senior Patrol until it disbanded.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Karin Whitney of Milan; sons Michael (Susann) of Edgington and Mark (Diana) of Rock Island; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren with two more on the way and one beautiful great-great granddaughter, Mia. David is also survived by his brothers, Bruce (Betty) of Bettendorf, Phillip of Moline; brother-in-law, Lee Cann of Bettendorf; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sons, David Lee and Thomas Roy; daughter, Kristin Sue; sister, Helen Flake and great-grandson Aaron Chaney.
The family wishes to express their most profound gratitude to the caring co-workers of their granddaughter Kelly on 4th Floor South at Unity Point Health Trinity.
