David P. Schmidt, 67 of Milan, died Feb. 9, 2018 at Valley Regional Medical Center, Brownsville, Texas.
A memorial visitation will be 10 am until 1 pm on Saturday, March 3rd at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
David was born Feb. 20, 1950 in Berwyn, Ill., the youngest of 16 children born to Henry and Rose Brungardt Schmidt. He married Barbara "Bobbie" Stevenson on July 1, 1973 in Riverside, Ill.
He graduated from the Riverside-Brookfield High School, Brookfield, Ill., in 1968, where he played football and wrestled. David received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin Stout, Menomonie, Wis., where he wrestled and was a TKE. He earned a Master's degree from Western Illinois University. He joined the faculty at Rockridge High School in 1972, where he taught industrial arts and began the wrestling program. The team was Cornbelt Conference Wrestling Champions in 1975. David later joined the staff at United Township High School, retiring in May of 2006.
He enjoyed traveling, all types of fishing, especially fly fishing, meeting new people and was a die-hard Cub fan. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren and he was loved by them.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie; sons and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Jennifer Schmidt, Port Byron, and Christopher Schmidt, Springfield, Ill.; grandchildren, Grace, Alice and Henry Schmidt, Port Byron; brothers and sisters, Leona Svetal, San Jose, Calif., Lucille (Ron) Eterno, Fort Myers, Fla., Melvin (Jean) Schmidt, Fort Myers, Bernice Ptak, Oceanside, Calif., and Delores Higdon, Naperville, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Marie, Betty and Joan Schmidt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Wilfrid, Ralph, Francis, Rudolph, Virgil and Emanuel Schmidt; and sisters, Corale Schmidt and Marge Lydon.
