Deloros Priscilla Sailor Young, 95, died Friday, June 2, 2023 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa. A memorial service to celebrate Dee's life is Wednesday, June 7, 2023, 11 AM at Grace Church PCUSA in Rock Island. Private inurnment will be at Chippiannock Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, June 6 from 4-7 PM at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory in Rock Island.
Dee was born September 23,1927 in Gary, Indiana to Floyd and Esther Palmer Sailor. She married DW Young on April 21, 1956. He passed away on April 18, 2012.
She graduated from Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana in 1945 and from St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago in 1949, where she trained as a registered nurse. She began her career at St. Luke's and was the supervisor of Pediatrics when she left to marry DW and move to Rock Island, IL. She continued her nursing journey in the pediatric departments of Moline Public and Franciscan Hospitals.
Service to others centered Dee's life. She volunteered at Children's Clinic, Meals-on-Wheels, the Red Cross, Trinity Hospital, and Friendship Manor. She was a creative leader for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and 4-H.
She was also a member of the RI County Bar Auxiliary, Senior and Junior Board of Visiting Nurses, and Chapter BK-PEO.
Dee was a lifelong, faithful and devoted Presbyterian. She was active in Presbyterian Women, served as treasurer for her church PW and at the Presbytery level. In her local church she served several terms as Elder and Deacon, and taught Sunday School and VBS. She lived her faith every day.
Her philanthropy funded multiple endowments at the Quad City Community Foundation that benefit the Hauberg Center, QC Botanical Center, and the DW Young Memorial Scholarship at RI High School. She was a generous supporter of the RI Parks and Recreation, specifically Douglas Park, the Preschool Program, and the First Tee Program at Highland Springs, as well as the Moline-Coal Valley School District's therapy dog program.
Throughout her life, Dee enjoyed needlework, quilting, gardening, and after retirement spending time at their home in northern Wisconsin. Dee and DW traveled the world and she especially enjoyed being with her family and loved her dogs. She was a loving and devoted wife, a fun and vibrant mom and grandma, and a dear friend to many.
Dee is survived by her five children: Nancy (Larry) Jacobsen, Patricia (Dennis) Heggen, DeWitt (Susan) Young, Susan (Dean) Hooks, and Kristin (Keith) Sanders; twelve grandchildren: Emily and David (Allison) Jacobsen, William and Samuel (Chelsay) Heggen, Louis (Michelle) and Magdalena Young, Charlie, Sam, Molly, and Pete Hooks, Paul and Meredith Sanders; and two great grandsons: Jackson and Sawyer Heggen.
