Donald Eugene Camlin, 68, of Rock Island, died Thursday, December 31, 2015 at his home in the company of his son, Wade. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made in care of the family to establish a fund at a later date.
Donald was born in East Waterloo, Iowa on November 9, 1947, a son of Wilbur Lee and Lois Johanna Groote Camlin. Donald was a third generation owner and operator of Aamco Transmissions for close to 30 years.
Donald loved traveling the country with his family racing motorcycles. This eventually led to his second career and passion in life which was building and racing motorcycles and hot rods. In Donald's earlier years, he became the Amateur Dirt Track Motorcycle Champion as well as set several land speed salt flat records. Donald was considered a master mechanic and was well respected in the community.
Donald loved his family and he enjoyed participating in many family oriented activities. Donald was a member of the American Motorcycles Association, Harley Owners Group and Heritage Church, Rock Island. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. He also enjoyed flying airplanes.
Those left to cherish his memory are his special companion, Dolly Beaird, Rock Island; son, Wade Camlin, Moline; grandchildren, Nick, Courtney, Haley and Carlee Camlin; brothers, Wilbur "Bill" (Mary Jean) Camlin, Waverly, Iowa and Ronald Camlin, Janesville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, David "Davey" Camlin.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Weibler's and Reiman's Harley Davidson, Springfield Armory and every other sponsor and friend that had been so generous, supporting and kind to Donald over the years!
