Obituary

Donald C. Clark, 98, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014 at the Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Burial is at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Additional visitation is 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to Augustana College or to First Lutheran Church, Rock Island.

Don was born Aug. 29, 1916 in Alexis, the son of Orville and Bertha Johnson Clark. He married Betty F. Clark on June 11, 1941 in Monmouth. She died Aug. 8, 2009.

Don graduated from Alexis High School and Augustana College, where he excelled in sports and was named to Augustana's Tribe of Vikings. He taught and coached at New Windsor and Orion and then Central and Franklin Junior High Schools in Rock Island. He coached football, basketball and track at New Windsor, Orion, Rock Island High School and at the Junior Highs. While serving as head football coach at Orion in 1953, his team went undefeated. Don and his late wife, Betty moved to Florida for 10 years following their retirement and returned to Rock Island in 1991.

He was a WW II veteran serving with the U.S. Army Air Force. Don was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he had served on the Church Council and was a long-time Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Augustana College Alumni Association, American Scandinavian Association Blackhawk Chapter of Retired Teachers and had served on the board of directors of the Quad City Youth Guidance Council and Svea Mutual Insurance, Orion. He enjoyed all sports and traveling.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy Clark, Alpha; daughter, Christine Butterfield, Canton, Mich.; granddaughters, Courtney Paris, Garner, N.C., Jessica Butterfield, Fairfax, Va., Julia (Dan) Retherford, South Lyon, Mich., and Stephanie (Emre) Kurtoglu, Canton, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Brad, Reese, Joshua, Ayla and Ella; and a very special cousin, Ann Dillbeck, Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; and son-in-law, Tom Butterfield.
