Donald W. Schroeder, 80, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday July 10, 2016 at his home.
A memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 29th, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alleman High School, Rock Island. Arrangements are entrusted to Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 - 7th Ave., Rock Island.
Donald was born August 28, 1935 in Rock Island, a son of Wallace and Genevieve R. Timm Schroeder.
He graduated from Rock Island High School. Donald married Colette Mortell on December 29, 1955 in Rock Island.
Donald served as Director of Public Works for the City of Rock Island. He retired after 38 years of service.
Donald was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, and former member of Allouez Council 658 Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing fast pitch softball and participated in several national championships. He also participated on a slow pitch softball team in the Senior Olympics. His love of sports extended to his coaching basketball at Jordan Catholic School for many years, and attending and coaching his children's and grandchildren's sporting events through the years.
Don was an avid horseman. He enjoyed transporting and showing Percherons in later years.
Surviving are his wife, Colette; children (and spouses), Thomas (Cathy) Schroeder, Anna Johnson, Ed (Cindy) Schroeder, Patrick Schroeder, John (Tara) Schroeder, Kathleen (Matt) Anderson, and Paul (Annette) Schroeder; twenty grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Michael W. Schroeder.
